“100 Deadliest Days” for Teen Drivers Begin

Summer is the season for outdoor parties, beach excursions, road trips, vacations, summer camps, and a variety of events that teens enjoy.  It’s the time of the year that every teen driver anxiously awaits—a period of time with extended freedom and lax schedules.  Unfortunately, because of this added freedom and the extra time behind the wheel, the season is also known for something else.

The period between Memorial Day and Labor Day mark “The 100 Deadliest Days of Summer,” which include seven of the top 10 deadliest driving days of the year. A study found that as compared to other age groups the rate of teen motor vehicle crashes was higher during the summer months. In some cases, these crashes resulted in death. While readers may assume that statistically, the drivers themselves were the ones most likely to be injured or killed, this is not the case. Instead, more often than not, it was another occupant of the teen driver’s vehicle or someone in other vehicles involved in the crash that were injured or killed. In fact, according to the National Center for Health Statistics, motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for 15 to 20-year-olds.

As the “100 deadliest days” have just begun for 2015, it is a good time for parents of teen drivers to discuss safe driving tactics with their children. In an effort to help parents and teen drivers work together, the National Safety Council has announced a new program, DriveitHOME. The program, designed by parents for parents, includes a fully interactive website featuring videos, information resources, and infographics to help parents understand the dangers their teens face.  With summer coming into full bloom, it is a good time to raise awareness of the dangers of driving and remind our teens of the risk that comes with it.
