New Research Links SUVs to More Fatal Pedestrian Accidents

New research uncovers a disturbing truth about SUVs, pickup trucks, and why fatal pedestrian accidents continue to rise.

We tell children to look both ways . . . maybe we should tell them to look what’s coming.

For decades, we’ve blamed distracted driving, speeding, impaired motorists, and smartphones for America’s pedestrian safety crisis. Those factors absolutely matter.

But a groundbreaking investigation from The New York Times suggests we’ve been overlooking another factor hiding in plain sight: the vehicles themselves.

The study reaches a sobering conclusion: Thousands of pedestrians may have died not because they were hit, but because they were hit by today’s larger SUVs and pickup trucks instead of the smaller cars that dominated America’s roads just two decades ago.

The results from this study need to be shared. The accident attorneys at Hoskins, Turco, Lloyd & Lloyd highlight key findings and what every Floridian needs to know about this alarming trend.

The study everyone is talking about: Why SUVs cause more fatal pedestrian accidents

To understand why fatal pedestrian accidents continue to climb, The New York Times analyzed years of crash data, vehicle registration records, federal fatality reports, and detailed vehicle measurements. Researchers also worked with crash reconstruction experts to better understand what happens in real-world collisions.

Their conclusion was striking:

  • There have been more than 3,000 pedestrian deaths between 2016 and 2024 that have been linked to the increasing height of vehicle front ends. If today’s vehicles had retained the lower hood designs common in the early 2000s, hundreds of lives each year might have been saved.

Two SUV design changes that increase rate of fatal pedestrian accidents

The investigation identified two major reasons why modern SUVs and pickup trucks are more dangerous for pedestrians.

1. Taller hoods change the physics of a crash

When a smaller passenger car strikes a pedestrian, the person’s body is more likely to roll onto the hood. The hood absorbs some of the force before the person falls away from the vehicle.

Modern SUVs often do something very different.

Because the hood sits much higher, the pedestrian is more likely to be knocked forward and downward, increasing the risk of being pulled beneath the vehicle and suffering devastating head or chest injuries. Crash modeling found that every additional inch of hood height increased the likelihood of a fatal pedestrian crash by approximately 2.8%.

2. Drivers can’t see what is right in front of them

The study also found that larger hoods and thicker windshield pillars have dramatically increased blind spots. Some popular SUVs and pickup trucks now have front blind zones large enough to completely hide children—or even adults standing close to the vehicle.

Why is this study important to Treasure Coast residents?

It’s easy to assume pedestrian fatalities happen only in crowded downtown areas. They don’t.

Throughout the Treasure Coast, they happen in suburban neighborhoods, outside grocery stores, near schools, on neighborhood streets and in parking lots. As SUVs and trucks become the dominant vehicles on Treasure Coast roads, the potential for severe pedestrian injuries grows as well.

What Treasure Coast drivers can do to prevent pedestrian accidents

While vehicle design plays an important role, safe driving remains the best defense against pedestrian accidents.

Drivers of SUVs and pickup trucks should:

  • Slow down near crosswalks and intersections.
  • Be extra cautious in parking lots and neighborhoods.
  • Check blind spots carefully before moving.
  • Allow extra stopping distance.
  • Assume pedestrians may be difficult to see directly in front of the vehicle.

What Treasure Coast pedestrians need to know

Pedestrians also need to recognize that today’s vehicles are different than those on the road twenty years ago.

When walking:

  • Make eye contact with drivers whenever possible.
  • Don’t assume a driver can see you.
  • Use marked crosswalks.
  • Stay visible, especially at night.
  • Be cautious around large SUVs and pickup trucks in parking lots and driveways.

Frequently asked questions about SUVs and pedestrian safety

Are SUVs more dangerous than cars for pedestrians?

Yes. Multiple studies have found that SUVs and pickup trucks are generally more likely to cause fatal pedestrian injuries than smaller passenger cars because of their higher front ends, increased weight, and larger blind spots.

Why are pedestrian deaths increasing?

Experts believe the increase is caused by several factors, including distracted driving, speeding, larger vehicles, roadway design, and increased traffic. The latest research suggests that vehicle design is an important contributor.

Which pedestrians are most at risk?

Children, older adults, cyclists, runners, and people crossing streets or walking through parking lots are especially vulnerable because they are more difficult for drivers of large vehicles to see.

Are pedestrian accidents common in Florida?

Yes. Florida consistently ranks among the states with the highest number of pedestrian fatalities in the country, making pedestrian safety a major public health concern.

The bottom line: Bigger vehicles mean bigger consequences

The latest research highlights a growing safety challenge that affects every driver and every pedestrian.

While SUVs and pickup trucks offer many benefits for their occupants, their size and design may increase the severity of pedestrian crashes in ways many people don’t realize.

Understanding these risks is the first step toward preventing future tragedies. Whether you’re behind the wheel or walking across the street, awareness, patience, and safer driving habits can help protect lives.
